Seminar on AI in Academia: Bridging Technology and Ethics

On June 21, 2024, the law school hosted a highly informative seminar under the supervision of Ms Yu, focusing on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic pursuits. The seminar was expertly led by Dr. Max Zhang, who elucidated the multifaceted applications of AI in the academic field. His presentation shed light on the myriad ways AI can assist students and researchers in enhancing their academic endeavors. From streamlining research processes and facilitating complex data analysis to providing innovative teaching aids, AI's potential in academia is vast and transformative. Max emphasized the importance of leveraging AI tools to foster a more efficient and effective educational environment. By integrating AI into their studies, students can access a wealth of resources and insights that would otherwise be time-consuming to gather, thereby enhancing their learning experience and academic performance.

A notable segment of the seminar was the interactive Q&A session, where students posed insightful questions regarding the standards of academia and the practical aspects of maintaining academic integrity while using AI. Max addressed these questions by highlighting the necessity of adhering to ethical guidelines and ensuring that AI is used as a supplement to, rather than a replacement for, rigorous academic work. To reinforce these concepts, a practical group workshop was conducted where students engaged in hands-on activities. These workshops allowed students to practice using AI tools in real-world academic scenarios, such as analyzing legal cases, conducting comprehensive literature reviews, and developing research proposals. This practical approach not only enhanced their understanding of AI applications but also provided them with the skills needed to apply AI responsibly and effectively in their academic work. The seminar, with its blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, successfully equipped students with the tools and ethical frameworks necessary to navigate the evolving landscape of AI in academia.
