Foreign experts share experiences in academic research and writing for the Literature Retrieval and Utilisation Course
The Literature Retrieval and Utilisation course in the current Spring semester is a collaborative course between Dalian Maritime University (DMU) and Swansea University. In terms of course content, it is designed to address the needs of literature researches across different legal jurisdictions and respond to the impact of AI on academic research and writing. Several foreign experts have been invited to teach and share their experiences.

On the morning of 5th March, Dr. Choi Jung-hwan (South Korea), Xing Hai Associate Professor of DMU Law School, was invited to share his experience of research and writing. Dr. Choi introduced the common problems in academic writing and the proposed methodology of solving the problems, based on his education and working background in South Korea, UK (Swansea University and University of Exeter) and China. He also explained in detail how to find and use academic resources via the E-database in the DMU library by taking maritime law issues as an example.

3月12日下午,英国斯旺西大学法学院高级讲师Andrew Iwobi博士,受邀为学生们讲授“How to Locate and Read Statutes/Delegated Legislation”。
On the afternoon of 12th March, Dr Andrew Iwobi, Senior Lecturer at the School of Law, Swansea University, was invited to give a presentation on “How to Locate and Read Statutes/Delegated Legislation”. Using the examples of “Year and a Day” Rule and “Sunday Trading”, Dr. Andrew Iwobi explained in detail how to find UK legislation that is relevant to academic writing and how to read and understand the legislation (title, structure, date, authority, etc).
On the morning of 24th March 2025, Dr. Wu Songyu, the course coordinator, invited Dr. Max Zhang (Canadian) to deliver a presentation titled “Leveraging AI for Legal Research and Writing”. As a researcher and practitioner in the integration of law and technology, Dr. Max Zhang gave practical workflow and scientific reference standards on how to make good use of artificial intelligence to reduce costs and increase efficiency of academic research.

Dr. Max Zhang focused on “the Academic Value of AI Tools”, providing a systematic, interdisciplinary analysis of the application scenarios of large language models, such as ChatGPT, in areas including literature review generation, multilingual writing optimization, and research methodology innovation. During the technical demonstration session, he showcased the process of using AI tools to construct a research framework and emphasized that “intelligent technology should serve as an efficiency enhancer for academic research, rather than a substitute”. To enhance students’ academic skills, Dr. Max Zhang underscored the importance of identifying, focusing on, and solving problems through an applied academic mindset. He guided students in developing an “AI-human collaboration” approach to academic innovation and provided a concrete demonstration of this concept through a case study on “Legislative Research on the Protection of China's Data Assets”.
Dr. Max Zhang's lecture focused on the new trend of the integration of artificial intelligence and legal education, deepening the students’ awareness of the application scenarios of AI technology in legal research through the modular analysis of the published literature, simulation training and other forms.
