On March 29th 2018, the 15th Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot has finally met its successful end. Dalian Maritime University Vis Moot Team led by Professo. Zhou Qinghua with 22 team members have done well in several rounds of the Vis Moot.

In the 15th CIETAC CUP International Commercial Arbitration Moot from Nov. 20th to 24th in 2017, DMU Vis Moot Team was against Jilin University, Peking University, Hunan Normal University and Beijing International Studies University. As the first round competition of the 15th Vis Moot, it attracted 50 teams from more than 40 universities and invited about 100 arbitrators, lawyers and experts from home and abroad as judges. DMU Vis Moot team was proudly awarded the third prize.

In the Moot Shanghai from March 5th to 8th in 2018, the opposing teams of DMU were Shanghai Jiaotong University, University of Amsterdam, Kobe University, and University of Cologne. The oralists in CIETAC CUP have made their improvement in Shanghai and responded to arbitrators’ questions properly with the help of the whole team supporters who kept researching and debating for persuasive arguments every nights. Finally, DMU team has received high remarks, running to the 12th place among more than 20 universities which laid a solid foundation for the next competitions.

Based on the experience gained from pre-moots, DMU Vis Moot Team stepped into the final stage in the 15th Vis East Moot. DMU was against Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology-Sri Lanka, Symbiosis Law School, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and University of Tübingen in Hong kong. The differences in the languages of the competitors indicated the expansion of the geographical scope of the teams participating in the competition, at the same time, the arbitrators’ understanding of the case was more comprehensive and the questions raised were more profound.

The opposing teams in Vienna were Ivan Franko National University of L’viv, Bilkent University, Federal University of Paraná and University Pantheon-Sorbonne (Paris I). The teams in international rounds were remarkable outstanding and much familiar with the issues and arguments in case. All of the team members have benefited from this precious competition experience.

To conclude, during the six months of preparation and competition, the students’ professionalism, English skills and logical ability have been fully trained. The Law School of Dalian Maritime University showed great strength in the fields of talents training and international cooperation through all these years organizing students to participate in domestic and international competitions of Vis Moot.
